In an astonishing outbreak of common sense, EU negotiators last night agreed a deal to ease the draconian Co2 targets for EU car manufacturers. Originally, EU car makers had to meet the new regulations by 2012, but have now won a concession to hit 65% of target by 2012, 75% by 2013, 80% by 2014 and 100% by 2015. This scaling back of the targets was achieved after Germany objected to the original proposals.
Saab go in to meltdown
We’ve had a statement in from Saab this morning telling us that they are now unable to pay their staff until they manage to get a bit of funding in. Didn’t they just get a pile of Euros in from Panga Da for a boat full of Saabs? According to two previous statements from Saab they received €30 million Euros at the end of May for 1,300 Saabs ordered by Pang Da, and another €15 million for a further 650 cars a week later.

Ahead of a launch at Detroit next week, Volvo releases details of the XC60 Plug-in hybrid concept and a raft of photos. Despite calling the Detroit-bound Volvo XC60 hybrid a concept, it’s clear that the hybrid crossover/SUV is heading for a production model, probably sometime later in 2012. And what better place to showcase a petrol-engined hybrid (the XC60 Hybrid is a petrol-engined hybrid, unlike the diesel-engined V60 plug-in hybrid) than in the US, where diesel is still the fuel of Satan for most?
